Yes folks, for those who know my boy, that IS cauliflower he is shoveling inward.
Hard to comprehend, I know.

She swears she didn’t know what happened or how the gum got there but as time went on, by bedtime she admitted to trying to store the gob of gum behind her ear.

My first instinct was to grab a pair of ice cubes and freeze the mess out. Mad, who has always been a bit scissor happy was wondering if we were going to cut it. But where it was, the amount, the length of her hair and the general challenge made me get the ice and hit the internet.

I was quite surprised by my discoveries; WD40, gasoline – what were these people thinking? I wouldn’t put that on my carpet let alone my child.
Then there was peanut butter. The successful results were praised for sparing locks world wide plus Mad hates peanut butter. Gum removal and an inaudible punishment in one.

After about 5 minutes of the ice doing absolutely nothing, I dug into the peanut butter.
Mad, of course asked again if she should get the scissors, but with a small glob and a little massage, a pull and a rinse with some dish soap it was all gone, only the aroma of peanuts remained…. for the rest of the day.

Ah to be a kid – and a kid out of the earshot of your naggy mother.

Baz, who has always been the good sleeper, was sleeping and Mad who has not, was out gardening – at our neighbours.
My flowers, of course, only get picked and delivered. My neighbour’s garden on the other hand, got a little pruning and deep root massage from my darling.

Swan Gazing June 2, 2007

We are very fortunate to live right by the water. It steps us away from the bustle of the city and gives us no excuse to pass up a breezy evening stroll.

As it was, it seems we weren’t the only family down by the water. This time of year is just brimming with new life.
There is an abundance of nature, from pussy willows, robins eggs and signets.

All too often I get absorbed in elbows on the table, cleaning up messes and getting to school on time. Not only do we have this resource but using it as a reminder that just a trip to the park or a walk around the block, taking the time to walk slowly and look down is really fun for them… and me.

This parenting thing doesn’t have to be all work. I need to remember that.

Makes one five year old I know H-A-P-P-Y!

Eat hot dogs (leaves and twig variety), toast marshmallows, stay up way late and sparklers too?!?!

Next we’re going to have candy for breakfast.

(Not.)

The Welcome Home Party January 29, 2007

Daddy was coming home today!! Mad just didn’t know it yet, but she doesn’t need an excuse to party.

J has been away on business for the past couple of weeks or so and even though I saw him in Frisco, the kids haven’t at all so they were beginning to rely heavily on ichat.

This kid of mine is always ready to throw a party. Mad is excited. She knows he’s coming, just doesn’t know when – that’s the part that I was keeping a surprise for her.

It didn’t even snap when we went into the airport parking lot, or when she wrote out the signs that read “Welcome Home DAD!”. However, her cake was created with gusto though – it HAD to have sprinkles – and boy did Baz like them!

The Fork In HWY 2007 January 1, 2007

I have had a series of resolutions, hasn’t everyone?
Quit smoking, sugar, alcohol. Eat better, exercise, drink more water, do yoga. Write a book, go back to school… blog every day.

What I found this year may be a bit of a contrast to the past. I’m pledging to take myself less seriously. This being a palindrome year for me. Getting spun around I could go backward or forwards. I’m hoping now if I might run the race again, I’ll do it with a sneak peek at the course. I don’t have to run the hell out of everyone else. I think I might jog, walk maybe. Listen to the birds and stop at the park with my kids.

Someone famous, er Ferris, once said:

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.”

Everything up until now has been a task and it hasn’t been much fun. Which I’m sure, doesn’t make me much fun for others. I’ve always been worried about something.

Well no more. Welcome 2007 – the year of free for all fun and excitement! Year of messy houses, last minute vacations and make believe.

Snack Bags December 8, 2006

Filed under: General, Holiday, JK-G6+, Mundane Life, Winter, creativity — Dayna @ 6:50 pm

This was a first for me seeing that Mad had just entered the public school system from a Montessori program. Mad made her own snacks there. Here, her day is shortened and snacks are as required as the curriculum.

Trying not to be dull… and not knowing the full snack expectation, I doodled and decorated.  Occasionally, I solicited help and of course, lately I’ve been in on the Holiday theme.  Brown paper bags are pretty much a dime a dozen, so the fun part is, when Mad wants to colour, we’ll do a few, and that’s when they get sparkly.

I do have to admit it’s almost nice to know now that “Some of the other kids don’t even get bags!”

It might be one of those things she’ll never remember me doing however, I think it’s important for us to keep it creative even with the most mundane, disposable art.bagbanner.jpg.

My goodness he’s gotten a tooth! Yes, Baz’s FIRST tooth has finally emerged.

Only FIFTEEN & A HALF months later…

Is that a record?
