Young Woman Denies Giving Birth To Baby In Closet March 23, 2005

Filed under: General — Dayna @ 9:40 pm

“Police said they don’t know why Vargas, 18 wanted to hide her pregnancy and the birth.”
So arrest the girl. And she is just a girl. I can’t help but feel for her. Who knows her knowledge of pregnancy or her fears for that matter? Where was the father? Why doesn’t HE get charged for abandonment?
Perhaps it’s the doula coming out in me, but every woman should get a chance at a “normal pregnancy” and “normal birth”. She deserves to feel safe and educated, capable of making informed decisions for her and her baby. Obviously this young woman felt neither seeing the outcome so what does arresting her truly accomplish?

Apparently I have pretty good oral hygene habits March 23, 2005

Perhaps now I know why I was almost two weeks past the estimated due date given for my daughter. And here I just thought it was bad math.
A recent study shows that the amount of bacteria in a mothers mouth could influence the onset of labor and a baby’s birth weight.

The best gift for new mothers: March 23, 2005

A break.

Once apon a time there were generations of new mothers (and even more for repeat mothers) who had a hospital stay that would lead up to a week to recover and adjust. I think that it actually used to be agreed that birth was comparable to death as a grand, life changing event, except that you get to stick around to watch after the birth of your darling new baby.

In our fast paced world, who has time to have a baby?
I easily remember with my first born the house full of visitors that trickled in throughout the day. I oddly felt I had to entertain them all and recount my daughters birth story over and over… and then clean up after them. All told, including my labour, it took about 40 plus hours to catch my 40 winks.
That first day was crutial in adjusting to everything encluding breastfeeding which was uncomfortable enough for me to get used to for the first time let alone having my father, father in law, brother, brother in law and other friends and relations overseeing the process.
I know that it’s tough to let go and be “taken care of”. I also know for certain that in our society, with so many more independant women having others or our mothers is a tough pill to swallow. Many of our mothers came from that generation who not only were given the extended hospital stay, they were convinced of the convenience of formula feeding and “just letting a baby cry it out”. Personally I find that a bit tough to rest through.
However, in cultures where meals are prepared and left, fresh food quietly brought in and put away and laundry done I can’t help but think that piece of mind could actually buy a bit better and more confident of a relationship with the newest member of a family more than a stuffed bear would.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read an article which has left me nodding so continuously:

Girl Scout cookies: good or evil? March 20, 2005

Filed under: General — Dayna @ 10:46 pm

During one of my regular visits to Blogging Baby I came across a great cookie debate.
I have to admit that I’m on the fence with this one… or maybe it’s just that I like the cookies and I’d hate to see them go. But I do remember feeling as though I were forced to sell the most and being over come with shyness my parents bought most of the lot. I’m guessing it didn’t teach me much about entrepreneurship – and that was over 20 years ago. I don’t know if I’d want my daughter going door to door out making money for others.

Aussie mums’ breasts worth billions March 20, 2005

Filed under: Breastfeeding, General — Dayna @ 7:42 pm

Let not all jump up and picture Pam Anderson’s insurance policy. This Australian health study has found that the health, environmental and economic benefits of breast feeding is worth billions.
Now here’s something that other nations should try picking up on: breastfeeding reduces health care costs not only by creating antibodies in babies and generally making them healthier than formula fed babies it also reduces certain cancers in the mothers who do it. Not to mention the reduction of the use of water and detergents because there are little to no bottles ever used or needed to be washed…. I could go on and on. (& trust me I eventually will.) Point is I really like the idea that nursing mothers should be eligible for a tax exemption on nursing pads and pumps etc.
Just another benefit to breastfeeding? Maybe.

Acupuncture Relieves Pregnancy-Related Pain March 20, 2005

Pregnancy is a marathon and labour is the finish line… yup, I’d like to think that’s true. No matter what planning and training you subject yourself to, most pregnant women are bound to have a few unexpected aches and pains. (As I write this with a heating pad strapped to my back:)
Acupuncture has been known to aid in many things from arthritis to quitting smoking – it seems to be the wonder remedy, too bad it just involves so many needles, but it may be worth a try.

Breast IS best – now even in bars March 20, 2005

Filed under: Breastfeeding, General — Dayna @ 7:24 pm

New legislation in Scotland has now made it an offence to stop a mother from nursing her child – anywhere.
I would have liked to think that society was mature enough to accept that feeding your child wasn’t pornography but the story has been heard over and over about a woman on a bus, in a changeroom at a clothing store and even in a restaurant who is asked to leave “because it makes the other patrons uncomfortable.” Perhaps the shrill sound of a starving baby is more appealing? Good for Scotland and the upwards of a $5000 fine for interrupting someone importants meal. Hopefullly this trend will catch on.

U.S. Won’t Ban Junk-Food Ads for Kids March 13, 2005

Filed under: General, The Truth — Dayna @ 11:34 pm

Advertisers win another one.
With nearly two thirds of Americans considered overweight why not keep stuffing fast food and hoho’s down their throat?
Kids deserve a bit of a chance.
There’s always a bit of an attempt made to fight back by advertising healthy foods and lifestyle choices but the numbers are a tad off balance.
Shameless plug for the documentary Supersize Me But a statistic I remember from it states that if you took the time at every meal to talk to your child about the benefits of healthy eating the message would be related about 1000 times per year. Advertisers on the other hand, easily get upwards of 10,000 messages through to children in the same time.

Pregnancy has a certain mystique. Millions of women have been through it, yet almost every woman’s experience is different. Perhaps that’s why so many myths, such as the one about heartburn, have formed and survived over the centuries. Here’s the truth behind them:
